Don't expect human life expectancy to grow much more, researcher says
NEW YORK (AP) — A new study suggests that humanity is hitting the upper limit of life expectancy. Advances in medical technology and genetic research are not translating into marked jumps in lifespan overall. That's according to researchers who found shrinking longevity increases in countries with the longest-living populations. The study was published online Monday by the journal Nature Aging. Experts say it’s likely that the number of centenarians will grow in the decades ahead, but that’s because of population growth.
Mega Millions tickets will climb to $5, but officials promise bigger prizes and better odds
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The cost of a Mega Millions lottery ticket will soon more than double, but officials said they’re confident players won’t mind paying more after changes that will lead to larger prizes and more frequent winners. Lottery officials announced Monday that it will cost $5 to play Mega Millions beginning in April. That is up from the current $2 per ticket. Along with the high price, officials plan changes leading to improved jackpot odds, more frequent giant prizes and larger payouts. Mega Millions and its lottery compatriot Powerball are sold in 45 states as well as the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Powerball also is sold in Puerto Rico. Powerball doesn't plan to increase prices.

Tilda Swinton explores assisted suicide in Pedro Almodovar’s 'The Room Next Door'
TORONTO (AP) — Although “The Room Next Door” is Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language feature, Tilda Swinton says it’s in the director’s inimitable style. Set in New York, Tilda Swinton stars as Martha, a terminally ill woman who chooses to end her life on her own terms. After reconnecting with her friend Ingrid, played by Julianne Moore, Martha persuades her to stay and keep her company before she goes through with her decision. Swinton says she believes individuals should have a say in their own living and dying. She says she has personally witnessed a friend’s compassionate departure and says that experience shaped her attitude about life and death.
The world's rivers faced the driest year in three decades in 2023, the UN weather agency says
GENEVA (AP) — The U.N. weather agency is reporting that 2023 was the driest year in more than three decades for the world’s rivers, as the record-hot year underpinned the drying up of water flows and contributed to prolonged droughts in many places. The World Meteorological Organization also says glaciers that feed rivers in many countries suffered the largest loss of mass in the last five decades. WMO warned that ice melt can threaten long-term water security for millions of people globally. Its secretary-general says water is the “canary in the coalmine” for climate change — a distress signal for a warming planet.
AP Top 25: Texas returns to No. 1, Alabama drops to No. 7 after upsets force reshuffling of rankings
It was a week of upheaval in The Associated Press college football poll. Texas returned to No. 1 after a one-week absence following Vanderbilt’s monumental upset of Alabama. The Commodores’ win over Alabama on Saturday caused the Crimson Tide to drop from No. 1 to No. 7. The last top-ranked team to fall so far was Ohio State, which plunged to No. 11 in 2010 following an October loss to Wisconsin. Texas, which had an open date, received 52 first-place votes and became the first team in two years to bounce in and out of the top spot in a span of three polls. The Longhorns also were just the third team since 2008 to be voted No. 1 after not playing the day before.
